Introducing: ME! (by dalas verdugo)

This was the video I made when I became the Community Director at Vimeo.

Tomorrow is my last day working at Vimeo. After four awesome years of seeing our site grow, improve, and get the recognition it deserves, I now feel like it’s time to step away and find out what the next project in my life will be.

It’s a little scary, because I am not leaving for a new job. I wanted to have some time to clear my head, re-center on my own life, and then move forward. However, I will be helping anja with her business, and it’s pretty unlikely that we’ll end up homeless.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have future projects you think we should work on together. I am good at identifying points of friction and inefficiencies and removing them to provide a better user experience.

dalas’ influence and values are deeply ingrained in what Vimeo has become. We started the same day (Jan 1, 2007) but he was a major influence on the site since before it was a company at all: he’s the 3rd user in the database. I spent a bunch of time in summer ‘05 watching all of the CV videos and considering applying for a job. The vibe of what was going on in that group of friends is a big part of what made me want to work here and dalas was in a big percentage of those videos.

To start, Vimeo only had 4 employees and I remember thinking having a whole person to do just “user stuff” seemed like overkill. Now I understand it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. The emphasis on cultivating good dialog and support has to be a priority always. Community is a feature. It brings people in, it makes them want to stay and it gets them spreading the word. When you think Vimeo, you think great community. That doesn’t just happen: dalas spent a very long time working on making it happen.

Scaling a community almost 6M people is a huge fucking feat but has been done before. Doing it with such class, level headedness and humor has not.

Truly the end of an era. Thanks man.
